The artwork for the 2021 Native Plant Garden Tour is a portrait of the Humboldt lily (Lilium humboldtii ssp. ocellatum) by Gene Bauer. Humboldt lilies grow wild in the hills of Southern California, and make wonderful garden specimens in greater Los Angeles. As geophytes (latin for earth-plant), they spend half of each year underground, waiting for winter rains for leaves to emerge before growing up to eight feet tall with profuse orange blooms arriving in June. With this dramatic annual cycle, we feel the Humboldt lily is the perfect icon for the 2021 tour, which celebrates native plant landscapes and their deep connection to the unique seasons and climate of Southern California.
